About the organization

ARLAN Foundation is a nonprofit conservation organization operating under the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan "On Non-Commercial Organizations". The Foundation was established as the successor to the Public Center for Wildlife Conservation "ARLAN", which operated from 1997 to 2014. It is governed by an assembly of founders and a Board of Trustees, with day-to-day management carried out by the Foundation's president.

Main areas of activity

Conservation of ecosystem, species and genetic diversity in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Target species / subspecies

Kazakhstan argali (O. a. collium), Karatau argali (O. a. nigromontana), Tian Shan argali (O. a. karelini).

Geographic scope of work

The Kazakh Uplands (Saryarka), Central Tian Shan, the Saur and Tarbagatai mountains, Karatau.

Experience working with wild sheep

Members of the organization have been studying wild sheep in Kazakhstan since 1992. Since 2018, research has been conducted at 5 model sites in the Karaganda, East Kazakhstan, Almaty and Turkestan regions. The studies focused on population status, habitat conditions, and the impact of limiting factors.

Key projects during the last 5 years

The organization's main projects since its founding have been related to developing the Central Asian Wild Ungulate Specialist Working Group. With funding from the Wild Sheep Foundation, two grants were received in 2025 — one for organizing the working group's meeting in Almaty, and one for the group's ongoing activities.
